(PETERSEN MEDIA- Merced, CA)- With Mother Nature delaying the start of the 2025 season opener at Merced Speedway, fans were rewarded for their patience as the season came to life on Saturday night as was highlighted by a thrilling USCS feature event that was won by Ricky Lewis.
A total of 72 cars were in the Merced Speedway pit area on Saturday night as the USCS Non Wing Sprint Car Series, the Western RaceSaver 305’s, Dwarf Cars, Mini Stocks, and Hobby Stocks all made up the card to kick the season off.
Putting on a high speed battle in traffic with the likes of Braden Chiaramonte and Brody Fuson, Ricky Lewis stole the show as he beat Fuson in a drag race to take the checkered.
While Fuson hung on to second place, Mark Hanson, Cole Wakim, and Jacob Tuttle rounded out the Top-5.
Western RaceSaver 305 action saw series favorite Kyle Rasmussen take top honors, Rasmussen was able to fned off the likes of Davey Pombo and Kevin Barnes Sr to pick up the win. Behind the podium finishes, Phil Heynen ran fourth and Tylor Henson rounded out the Top-5.
In Dwarf car action, Pete Piantanida was the start of the show. After falling back to third in the early goings of the race, Piantanida came to life just past the halfway point as he ripped into the lead on the 13th lap and never looked back. He raced on to score the win over Dan Zuger, Eric Weisler, Mark Biscardi, Tommie Piantanida, Eddy Claessen and Toby Brown.
In all, 17 Mini Stocks were in the pit area for their season opening event, and in the end it was Dennis Cosens III racing to the feature event win. Cosens was chased across the stripe by Ryland McCoy, Chris Corder, Patrick Kelley, and Gene Glover rounding out the division’s top-five.
Jimmy Brewer was top dog in the Hobby Stock Class on Saturday night as he bested the field of nine cars. Settling into second as the race came to life, Brewer made his winning move on the 11th lap as he raced past John Tevis to grab the top spot. After losing the lead, Tevis hung on to the second position as Xaivier Baez and Joy Weaver capped off the top five finishers.
Though racing goes dark this coming weekend at Merced Speedway, the action will be mighty on Saturday and Sunday as the Malicious Monster Trucks head to town for a thrilling two night affair.
